Found this funky frame and painting at a junk/antique store and could see the potential in it. You can find these frames everywhere and don't worry if they are not perfect because we can fix that with cast objects. There are basically three easy steps to change the look of the frame.

As a mixed media artist, the hunt for these treasures it part of the joy when I do a piece of art. The magic of art is the other part.
I have a large collection of fondant molds as well as silicone molds that I have created. Depending on the piece of art or the time I have, I may leave the paper clay in the mold until it has dried. If a piece has delicate edges this is a great way for it to dry. It also prevents warping. I keep a square of linoleum in my studio that I put my "wet" cast objects to dry. They tend not warp when I put them on the linoleum.
Next, I glued the cast pieces on to the frame with E6000. I like how fast it sets up. When working on a painting there is so much waiting time for paint or clay to dry. To spray the frame, I used a Krylon matte black.
Finished painting collaged with part of the original painting an placed in the updated frame. Not only fun but looks so much better than the original. Now, wasn't that easy?
My friends call me a mad art scientist because I love to experiment. In this case, I am using a Creative Paperclay® element as a Lover's Eye inside a cigar box that has been laser cut and etched then embellished. The embellished clay eye becomes the "sweet" spot in this piece of art.
The Creative Paperclay® flower was dry brushed with a Titan Buff acrylic paint after a wash of Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold acrylic paint had dried. A glass eyeball was glued to the center then vintage pearls were glued around it.

The inspiration for this project was Lover's Eyes. In the 18th and 19th centuries, wealthy British and European lovers exchanged "eye miniatures" -- love tokens so clandestine that even now, in the majority of cases, it is impossible to identify their recipients or the people they depict.

Next I took a cigar box to the local makers space ( a makers space is a shared workshop and artist/artisan community.) These spaces throughout the country allow you to use 3D printers and laser cutters/etchers as well as many other techno tools. Often local junior colleges have these as well.

Before taking it in, I applied metal leaf to the box, sanded it and then worked out the design I planned to etch into it.
I found a new product that I hadn't known about - foil spray. This week is experiment with foil spray week and this is just the start. I created a little animal with Creative Paperclay® on my plastic covered work table. Note: If left to dry on the table, it won't warp.
I added dots with dimensional paint in a bottle. Any brand will work. This was added so I could see how foil works with texture. When the dots dried, I coated the dog shape with polymer medium in order to seal the surface. The foil will absorb into the clay if it is not sealed and loses the foil look.
To age the piece, rub burnt umber paint on it. If you put too much on and can't get it off just slightly spray with alcohol and wipe excess off with paper towel.

Not sure which I like better. Aged and not aged have interesting looks.
Want to cut Creative Paperclay® slurry with scissors? Sounds weird but always great to know all kinds of little tricks to expand that ever growing art arsenal.

SUPPLIES

Creative Paperclay® slurry
Wax paper
Soft gel or Modge Podge

Start by thoroughly mixing Creative Paperclay® slurry and soft gel together. I add approximately 40%-50% soft gel to the clay slurry.
My work table is cover with a plastic tarp. I spread the mixture on the plastic and cover with wax paper before rolling it out with a rolling pin. Because no air is getting to it because of the wax paper and plastic it will take 1-2 days to dry depending on humidity and thickness. I live in the desert so things dry faster than other places.
When it has dried, it can be peeled off the plastic and cut with scissors. Great way to cut shapes for mobiles, gift tags, collage elements for art, etc. A small idea with endless possibilities.
I applied Creative Paperclay® to the top and brayered it flat. Next was to apply a stamp to it but I wanted an aged look so I only pressed down in certain areas. Then it was left to dry.
A holographic foil was applied in places to the tacky adhesive size. Now it is a wonderful little box that just might get re-gifted to a friend. I wonder if the friend who gave it to me would even recognize it?
The image transfer here was done with a toner image and Chartpak blender pen.
I am all about texture and surface techniques so here is a few you may not have tried on your Creative Paperclay® projects.

SUPPLIES
Creative Paperclay®
Oil Pastels
Mica Powder
Vaseline
Acrylic Paint

This first one is oil pastels applied to a sealed textured Creative Paperclay® surface. If you use the water soluable oil paints, you can then blend them with water.

You can either apply a thin coat of polymer medium or water to your sealed textured Creative Paperclay® surface then with your finger or a dry brush, apply mica powder. This picks up the highlights well.
Then paint over it with acrylic paint. The paint will bead up on the vaseline. When the paint dries wipe it off with a dry paper towel. Then wipe again with a soapy paper towel. Reapply dabs of vaseline but in different areas that the first application.
Time to get ready for the holidays starting with Halloween and Day of the Dead. I started by rolling out Creative Paperclay® on a masonite panel then laying a stencil over it and brayering it so the pattern would show well. Then a cast skull was glued to it with soft gel. The edges were then trimmed and smoothed with a small amount of water on my fingers then allowed to dry.
Black paint was applied to the surface and allowed to dry before a wash of buff paint was applied. This was followed by gluing jewelry parts and fake flower pedals down.
If you are going to create an ofrenda for Day of the Dead, here is the 3 level layout. This can all be miniaturized by creating the different ofrenda elements with the paper clay such as fruit, sweets and bottles. Be careful though. One year I made faux chocolates for a heart shape box using the clay and my husband tried to eat one.Darlene Olivia McElroyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14669144593747747030noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3821439854605281517.post-55610321456325650692017-09-08T00:30:00.000-07:002017-09-21T08:33:43.386-07:00Mica & Creative Paperclay® Shrine

I am researching info for an article and class on shrines. That inspired me to create one with Creative Paperclay®. I always roll out my clay between layers of wax paper and also let them dry on it. It won't warp this way. I texturized it with a homemade stamp.
A metallic gold wash was added. When dry a burnt umber stain was applied and the alphabet letters were added. The white liquid over the Buddha is adhesive size for the metal leaf. It goes on white. When it turns clear it is ready to use.
I applied the metal leaf and decided I wanted more on the top and bottom for balance. On the Buddha I added a burnt umber stain then I added a floater on the back so it can be hung on a wall with a bit of a shadow.
Look at my beat up molds. They are very well used. When I have a little time but not enough time to dig into a painting, I cast objects. I have drawers full of them that are ready when needed. Some are created with plain Creative Paperclay® and others are tinted or painted.

I decided to make a beach necklace piece of art today.

SUPPLIES
I started by applying surface texture to my panel then gluing down cast and found objects to my surface. I gave it a wash of tan over the white. I actually liked it at this point but I wanted a more colorful beach look.
I applied paint to part of the base and started adding elements for placement. At this point, I sit back and look at it for several days to see if I need to change color, soften the look or if it needs more details.
After
the paper clay dried the next step was to block in the face with paint.

I
rolled out some clay on a sheet of plastic and used the cookie cutter
to create the shape. Use different mark making tools and stamps, I added
the design in the clay. Last, I took a wet paint brush to smooth out
the edges. Normally, I use my fingers but because of the detail I used
the brush.
This is my favorite Creative Paperclay® post while being on the Creative Paperclay® Design Team and I wanted to share it again. To me it is all about paint and texture and I thought the paint match job came out perfect.

As a narrative artist I find that I am always adjusting the stories
around me. This clay mask has been hanging around the studio for years.
It has been cast, been in videos and I felt it was time for a facelift.
Because it was clay, I knew it would take Creative Paperclay® very well.
it the feel of the mask.
I have so many projects that I have created laying around my studio. One of my favorite things to take one of these and try out different surface treatments. The mad art scientist in me wants to continuously experiment on techniques. I didn't worry about the crack because I was just playing around.

I started with this house shape I had made with Creative Paperclay and had stamped and stenciled on. Because I wanted to add a red foil later, I coated it with a red oxide acrylic paint.
When the paint had dried, I coated the surface with Wunda Size, which is a water based glue for foils and metal leaf. It is white when applied and when it becomes clear it will be tacky and ready for the application of the foil.
I am using a holographic foil (shown here). Lay the foil (pretty side up) over the tacky surface and burnish with a spoon or your finger. Because my background has texture I knew it would only transfers on the raised areas unless I burnished hard.
Because it is a holographic foil is changes as the light changes or as you move around it. Of course, it is almost impossible to photograph. It added a nice red shimmer to the plain red oxide color.
This
piece started out as a demo in one of my books. I found it while
cleaning out my studio and thought it could use a little dimension so I
created Creative Paperclay® trees. Often when looking at an old piece
you can see other possibilities. Apologies. The starter picture did not
turn out.
Sculpting tools
Acrylic paint

I started by dampening the surface for added adhesion when I applied the clay.

Once
the clay was laid down, I brayered it flat and trimmed off the areas
that I didn't want with an exacto knife. Using my clay sculpting tools, I
scribed lines into the clay then smoothed it slightly with water on my
finger tips. When dry I added acrylic paint.
