He Tattooed Love Notes on My Heart

OK, I got a little girlie here but I was working on a theme. Plus I had more fun casting the dimensional hearts from some large milagros I have. Truckloads of casting ideas are now running wild in my head. After this weekend I plan to spend a month just experimenting with techniques.

He Tattooed Love Notes on My Heart, 36" x 36" mixed media on panel.

Jungle Makeup or Nature's Dandies

Why did I paint this piece? I don't know. I was cruising the web and there was a culture that tattooed skulls. Of course that took me on a weird creative trip. Does this ever happen to you or am I the only strange one?

The layout of this piece is based on a very old piece of my art. I wanted to revisit this piece as the artist I am now and with all that I have learned since then. The older piece on the top left was called For the Pleasure of His Eyes and the one on the top right is the new one in progress, I Am the Moth to Your Flame, with the finished piece on the bottom.

Aren't we all moths? Can we avoid the possible destruction of giving into temptation of any kind or do we boldly, with laughter, go headfirst into the hot flames and get scorched. Perhaps we just look at it from afar, contemplate the different scenarios and enjoy just being a voyeur. Either way it is a great story to paint.

Checking You Out

One of my galleries, La Posada in Santa Fe, asked it's artists to paint 14" x 11" self portraits to hang together on one wall. Hell, I have a hard time looking in a mirror so I ended up just doing one eye. It's my best feature anyway. Being told what to paint is always more difficult than just painting what prompts you at any given moment.
